Over 75,000 migrants crossed English Channel in past four years

Over 75,000 migrants have reached the United Kingdom territory by crossing the English Channel in the last four years, despite several unsuccessful attempts to stop the illegal migration through this dangerous journey.

According to the data provided by the United Kingdom’s government, a total of 75,628 people have crossed the English Channel since 2018, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The English Channel route, which has been used by a large number of migrants to enter the UK from France, has often been among the top priority issues of authorities of both territories, which have continuously been working in order to halt the illegal migration through this tunnel route.

According to the figures provided by the UK’s Home Office, for a period between January 2018 and June 2022, a total of 51,881 migrants have reached Britain. In addition, a total of 23,747 migrants have been detected based on the data provided by the Ministry of Defence.

A recent report provided by the National News shows that in 2018, a total of 299 people were registered to cross the English Channel in an unlawful way. At the same time, it has been reported that in 2019, a total of 1,843 crossings were registered, while in 2020, the figures stood at 8,466, and in 2021 there were a total of 28,561 migrants registered in this country.

“The crisis in the Channel, driven by global migration and organised crime, is causing an unprecedented strain on our asylum system. Despite the lies they have been sold by the people smugglers, migrants who travel through safe countries to illegally enter the UK will not be allowed to start a new life here,” a representative of the UK’s government pointed out in this regard, according to the National News report.

A recent report provided by the European Union Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, revealed that the number of people who crossed the English Channel in the first nine months of this year was 52,700, surpassing the figures of last year, during which year 52,000 irregular migrants were registered.

“So far in 2022, this represents a 68% increase on the same period in 2021, including both attempts and crossings in small boats. As the winter approaches, the number of attempts might increase before the sea conditions worsen and make the crossing more dangerous,” the statement notes.

Recently the Ministry of Defence reported that on October 9, more than 1,000 migrants crossed the English Channel.
