We live in highly mobile world, where migration is not only inevitable but also an important dimension of human development. Nearly one billion - or one out of seven - people are migrants, internal or international. While international migration has no impact on world population growth, it has a vital social and economic impact on countries and regions. Over the past two decades, the volume and complexity of migration has increased. International migration has now become a global phenomenon and an issue of growing concern of the international community. According to the 2009 United Nations Human Development Report, migration - both within and between countries - has the potential to increase people’s freedom and improve the lives of millions around the world.
In the past 35 years, the number of international migrants has more than doubled, to an estimated 214 million worldwide. These include economic migrants compelled to move to provide for their families, refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and victims of human trafficking. The vast majority are economic migrants, who have but few options to remain in their country and who are leaving their homes to look not necessarily for a better job, but for any job. The number of undocumented migrants worldwide has been estimated to be roughly 30 - 40 millions, which amounts to around 15 - 20% of the world’s migrant population.

Net migration rate is the difference of immigrants and emigrants an area in a period of time, divided usually per 1,000 inhabitants (considered on midterm population). A positive value represents more people entering the country than leaving it, while a negative value mean more people leaving than entering it.
Human migration has become a matter of global concern, as migration has increased and affects every country in the world.
In a paper delivered to the Journal of the Statistical Society in England in 1885, Ernest George Ravenstein, a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, outlined a series of "laws of migration" that attempted to explain and predict migration patterns both within and between nations. Ravenstein's basic laws, and additional laws subsequently derived from his work, continue to serve as the starting point for virtually all serious models of migration patterns over a century later. For his migration study, Ravenstein compared census data gathered in 1871 and 1881, the most recent tabulations available at the time. Although Ravenstein's paper only focused on information gleaned from surveys within the United Kingdom, he made the bold jump of formulating from his observations a series of "laws of migration":
