Germany registered 952,000 arrivals from Ukraine until August 2022

The German authorities have announced that the country has registered around 952,000 arrivals from Ukraine from February 2022 until August 2022.

According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, the highest number of arrivals from Ukraine was registered in March and April, which are the first two months after Russia’s attack on Ukraine started.

In March, Germany registered around 431,000 arrivals from Ukraine, whereas in April, the country registered around 198,000 arrivals from Ukraine, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Destatis explains that based on provisional results, arrivals from Ukraine decreased after April. Nonetheless, the country still registered entries of citizens of Ukraine during the summer months too. It has been revealed that Germany registered an average of 1,000 arrivals per month during summer.

“Based on provisional results of an ad-hoc evaluation of raw data from migration statistics, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, although immigration from Ukraine has decreased since then, it remained markedly above previous year’s level of an average 1,000 arrivals per month also in the summer months of July (58,000) and August (70,000),” the statement of Destatis reads.

Due to the high number of Ukrainian refugees that reached Germany, the country’s population reached a record high.

Destatis said earlier in September that the arrival of Ukrainians fleeing war led to a rise in immigration similar to that of 1992, when borders opened in eastern Europe, and the war was waged in Yugoslavia, and to that of 2015 when migrants fled to Germany.

Compared to the end of 2021, the population in Germany increased by 82,000 people or 0.1 per cent.

Destatis noted that the majority of refugees that reached Germany were women and children. Data show that at the end of June 2022, the number of women and girls from Ukraine living in Germany was up by 501,000 compared to the end of 2021.

As for the number of Ukrainian men and boys, data show that the number was up by 248,000. This means that around 750,000 citizens of Ukraine were living in Germany in the first half of 2022.

Regarding the total net immigration, provisional results have shown that it was around one million.

Similar to Germany, the population has also increased in other countries that registered a high number of arrivals from Ukraine. Poland has registered the highest number of refugees from Ukraine among other European Union countries.

As for the overall data, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that a total of 7,646,595 refugees from Ukraine have been recorded across Europe.
