Hungary accepts over 15,000 Ukrainian refugees in one day

The national police headquarters of Hungary have revealed that over 7,558 people crossed into Hungary directly from Ukraine on Thursday, August 11, while another 8,193 from Ukraine crossed from Romania.

In a statement issued today, the government of Hungary stated that for about 393 people, the police had issued temporary residence permits, which are valid for 30 days, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“Holders of such permits must contact a local immigration office near their place of residence within thirty days to apply for permanent documents. Budapest received 28 people, ten children among them, by train,” the statement reads.

In addition, last Wednesday, Hungary received over 12,000 Ukrainian refugees.

According to the Hungarian police, about 6,634 people crossed into Hungary directly from Ukraine, and another 5,726 from Ukraine crossed from Romania. As a result, the police have also issued temporary residence permits for thirty days to 355 people.

In July, the authorities in Hungary revealed that due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the number of migrants at Hungary’s eastern borders is continuously increasing, with over 10,000 refugees arriving daily and reaching over 820,000 so far.

“Europe was facing “dramatic challenges” including a “permanent inflationary environment” due to the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. “The migrant crisis is aggravating … and Hungary has to face that challenge presenting itself as pressure from the south and the east simultaneously, ” Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said, adding that immigrants were often aggressive and violent.

On July 15, according to the figures provided by the Hungarian police, around 24,000 refugees from Ukraine entered Hungary over that same weekend.

The same source also shows that on Saturday, June 18, another 11,000 refugees entered Hungary.

Otherwise, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on July 5 that a new border protection body would be created within the police force to guarantee border security.

Such a move has come as a result of the increase in migratory pressure in Hungary, said the Prime Minister, emphasizing that he has instructed the Minister of the Interior, Sándor Pinter, to create the body within the next two months.

According to Orbán, the body will function within the police but will not consist of police officers or soldiers and will deal exclusively with border protection.

Now that Ukraine’s situation is unstable due to the war, Hungarian soldiers will have to be employed in border protection instead of being trained.
