About 3.6% of the world’s population are migrants

The number of migrants who moved from one country to another exceeded 280 million in the world, which corresponds to 3.6 percent of the world’s population.

Since 2000, December 18 is celebrated as International Migrant Day every year.

According to the UN International Organization for Migration, as of 2020, there were 281 million migrants worldwide, up 3.5 percent from the previous year. Of these, 135 million are women, 146 million are men.

For comparison, in 1970 there were only about 84 million migrants in the world, in 1990 – already 153 million, and over the past 50 years the number of migrants has tripled.

At the same time, the volume of internal migration in countries is much higher than migration outside the state.

The vast majority of people resort to migration for reasons of unemployment, domestic problems and education. Some are forced to leave their homes and countries due to military conflicts, persecution, natural disasters or other tragic events.

Most migrants live in Europe (87 million) and Asia (86 million). These two regions of the planet are home to 61 percent of all migrants in the world. Next in popularity among migrants are North America, where 20.9 percent of migrants live, and Africa, 9 percent.

In the Latin America and Caribbean region, the number of migrants more than doubled (from about 7 million to 15 million). This is the region with the highest growth in the number of migrants.

Oceania is home to 9 million migrants, or 3.3 percent of all migrants.

In 2019, there were about 169 million migrant workers worldwide, representing about two-thirds (62 percent) of all migrants in the world. Only 78 percent of migrants worldwide are of working age (15-64).

The number of men among labor migrants in 2019 was 98.9 million, women – 70.1 million. 102.4 million or 61 percent of all labor migrants live in three regions: North America, Arab countries, Northern, Southern and Western Europe.
