Ukraine, Red Cross to launch new program for payments to IDPs

The Cabinet of Ministers and a mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross will launch a new program for payments to internally displaced persons, amounting to UAH 2,500 per person.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported this on Telegram.

"The government, with the participation of a mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine and the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, will launch a new program for payments to IDPs," Shmyhal wrote.

He added that the government has already made a respective decision at its meeting.

"Financial assistance under the program will amount to UAH 2,500 per person. Payments will be made on the basis of available information from the database of internally displaced persons. That is, no applications will be required to receive payments," Shmyhal added.

He said he estimated that almost a million people will receive payments. Preference will be given to IDPs from the occupied territories and combat zones.

Shmyhal recalled that other programs for internally displaced persons continue to be in place in Ukraine, particularly UAH 2,000 from the government for each adult and UAH 3,000 per child. There are also two joint programs with the UN and one joint program with UNICEF to pay UAH 2,200 to vulnerable IDPs.

According to the International Organization for Migration, there were more than 6.5 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine as of late March this year.

Russia's armed aggression has been going on in Ukraine since February 24. The enemy is shelling and destroying infrastructure, residential areas of Ukrainian cities, towns and villages, killing civilians.
