5,249 migrants captured by the Turkish-Bulgarian border

During the first eight months of 2018, Turkish border authorities seized 13,900 illegal migrants trying to cross the border with Bulgaria and Greece near Edirne.

According to the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, 8,561 migrants were captured by the Turkish-Greek border and 5,249 by the Turkish-Bulgarian border.

The wire fence that was raised by Bulgaria on the border with Turkey is obviously a problem for the illegal migrants. Moreover, the Maritsa River, which forms the border between Turkey and Greece, is drying up during the summer months, and only 12.5 km from the border with Greece, has wire fencing. This is also the reason why migrants are heading primarily on this route to Europe.

The Edirne area is a starting point for migrants traveling to Europe and is the most regular route of traffickers who take migrants to the military zone and leave them there.
